Active Recovery
Walks are my secret weapon for weight lost (Especially Post-Illness)
If you are on a weight loss journey (like me), it is incredibly easy to fall into the “all-or-nothing” trap. We often think that if we aren’t dripping in sweat or hitting intensive cardio goals, the day is wasted.
Last night, I reminded myself why that mindset just doesn’t work long-term.
I am currently on the tail end of recovering from a cold and fever. Originally, Adrian and I had planned a full evening walk right around Marina Bay after work. However, my runny nose flared up, and I knew a heavy brisk workout would overtax my immune system. Instead of cancelling everything and sitting on couch, I chose a midle ground: an active recovery walk.
The 2.4km Pivot : Asia Square to Millenia Walk
I decided to walk solo from Asia Square to Millenia Walk to meet Adrian for dinner. It was a straightforward 2.4km route, framed by the beautiful, calm Singapore evening skyline.
Here is why this minor pivot was actually a massive win for my weight loss and wellness goals :
It Kept My Consistency Alive
Weight loss relies entirely on habits. By choosing to walk to dinner, I kept my daily step habit alive without pushing my body into exhaustion.
It Assisted My Immunity
Heavy workouts suppress your immune system when you are already sick. A gentle, breezy walk does the opposite - it boosts circulation and helps clear out lingering nasal congestion.
It Kept Me Mindful
Walking alone allowed me to check in with my breathing, pace myself, and enjoy the scenery before settling down for a healthy dinner.
The Takeaway
Sustainable weight loss is built on flexibility. If you body is recovering from being unwell, do not force a high-intensity workout that will set your recovery back by a week. Listen to your body, choose a lighter route and remember that a 2.4km gentle walk is always a victory.
Have you ever struggled to find the balance between resting and staying active while recovering?
