Just Keep Walking
There are walks where I stop to admire the sunset, take photos and generally behave as though I have all the time in the world. And then there are walks like this one. Just walk. This was one of my longer training walks — around 7.8km and about 1 hour 46 minutes on my feet.
Nothing particularly glamorous happened. No finish line. No medal. No big event waiting at the end. Just kilometres.
And strangely, I think these ordinary walks are becoming some of the most important ones for me. When we first decided to walk the Camino, the distances sounded quite manageable when written neatly on an itinerary. 9km. 10km. 13km. 15km.
Easy to read.
Slightly different story when your own two feet have to do the work. 😂
So these walks around Singapore are becoming my little testing ground. Not to see how fast I can go, but to slowly get my body used to spending longer periods on my feet. The Relive map at the end always makes me smile. While I'm actually walking, it sometimes feels as though I'm just going from one familiar place to another. Then the map pulls further and further back and suddenly I can see this long yellow line stretching across Singapore.
Oh. I actually walked all that!!!
And that's a rather nice feeling.
I'm still not interested in chasing pace. Camino isn't going to be a race for me. I want to be strong enough to walk each day, wake up the next morning and be able to do it all over again — for ten consecutive days. That's the real training.
There will be longer walks ahead. Eventually I'll work towards 10km, 12km, 15km and perhaps even my planned 18km training walk. But I don't need to get there today.
Today, 7.8km was enough.
Another little yellow line on the map.
Another deposit into the legs.
And another step closer to Spain. 👟🇪🇸❤️
Step by step. At my own pace.
